Explorador-erudito y orientalista inglés. Expulsado de Oxford en 1842, viajó a la India como funcionario subalterno. Allí se disfrazó de musulmán y escribió detallados informes sobre bazares y burdeles. Luego viajó a Arabia, nuevamente disfrazado de musulmán, convirtiéndose en el primer europeo no musulmán en entrar a las ciudades sagradas prohibidas; dejó registro de sus aventuras en
Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Mecca [Peregrinación a Medina y La Meca] (1855–56), relato clásico acerca de la vida musulmana. En 1857–58 encabezó una expedición con
John Hanning Speke en búsqueda de las fuentes del río
