(19 mar. 1821, Torquay, Devonshire, Inglaterra–20 oct. 1890, Trieste, Austria-Hungría).

Explorador-erudito y orientalista inglés. Expulsado de Oxford en 1842, viajó a la India como funcionario subalterno. Allí se disfrazó de musulmán y escribió detallados informes sobre bazares y burdeles. Luego viajó a Arabia, nuevamente disfrazado de musulmán, convirtiéndose en el primer europeo no musulmán en entrar a las ciudades sagradas prohibidas; dejó registro de sus aventuras en Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Mecca [Peregrinación a Medina y La Meca] (1855–56), relato clásico acerca de la vida musulmana. En 1857–58 encabezó una expedición con John Hanning Speke en búsqueda de las fuentes del río Nilo; afectado por la malaria, regresó después de convertirse en el primer europeo en alcanzar el lago Tanganyika. Sus viajes dieron origen a 43 escritos sobre temas como los mormones, los pueblos de África Occidental, las tierras altas de Brasil, Islandia y la Bolonia etrusca. Aprendió 25 idiomas y numerosos dialectos; entre sus 30 volúmenes de traducciones se encuentran antiguos manuales orientales sobre el arte del amor. A su famosa traducción de Arabian Nights [Noches árabes] agregó anotaciones etnológicas y audaces ensayos que le hicieron ganar muchos enemigos en la sociedad victoriana. Después de su muerte, su esposa Isabel, una devota católica, quemó los diarios y bitácoras que había escrito durante 40 años.
